Mwansabombwe is located in Luapula province and was established in 2012. The district enjoys good connectivity through a major road which links to Nchelenge, Mwense, Kawambwa, further creating access to Northern province through the Kawambwa-Luwingu road and eventually Nakonde. The district shares international boundary with the Democratic Republic of Congo adding to the national potential for international trade.
The district has a population of about 58,919 according to the national census conducted in 2022 by the Zambia Statistics Agency. Mwansabombwe district covers a total area of 1,200 Square Kilometer of which 64 Square Kilometers is state land. The district has one constituency called Mwansabombwe constituency which has twelve (12) wards namely Kabalenge, Mbereshi, Kayo, Chipita, Mwansabombwe and Kazembe wards. Others are Lufubu, Kakose, Mulele, Salanga and Mununshi.
The district has a total of two hospitals namely Mbereshi Mission Hospital and the newly constructed District Hospital located in Kazembe ward. It also has a total number of six(6) Health Centers and five(5) Health posts. In the education sector, the district has a total of thirty-six (36) schools of which four (4) are secondary schools namely Mabel Shaw Girls Secondary School, Kabalenge Day Secondary, Kapale Secondary School and Kazembe Secondary School. The District also has four (4) combined Schools namely Chinyanta, Mukamba, Mumbolo and Salanga combined schools respectively. One community school and twenty-seven are primary schools.
