The council has an exhaustive list of functions as outlined in the local government act. Some of these are outlined below as shown below. The council has committed itself to these functions and has set out plans to execute them:

• Prohibit and control the development and use of land and buildings and the erection of buildings, in the interests of public health, public safety, and the proper and orderly development of the area of the local authority.
• Establishment and maintenance of roads.
• Establish and maintain a system of lighting in streets and other public places
• Prepare and administer schemes for the encouragement of and participation in community development.
• Establish and maintain social and recreational facilities and public entertainment
• Establish and maintain cemeteries, crematoria, and mortuaries, and otherwise provide for and control of the dead, and destitute persons who die in the area of the local authority.
• Provide municipal public works only in respect of the needs of the municipality in the discharge of their responsibilities to administer functions specifically assigned to the local authority under the Constitution or any other written law.
• Provide and maintain supplies of water.
• Register of transactions in connection with land charges that may be prescribed in any written law relating to land charges.
• Enumeration and registration of persons or property for any purpose connected with the administration of the area of the local authority.
